Georgia Justice Project seeks an attorney excited to join a collaborative team focused on lifting the voices of our clients and removing barriers to opportunity they face due to an arrest or conviction record.
ROLE OVERVIEW
Georgia Justice Project (GJP) is hiring an attorney to join our Record Clearing Team. This could be a wonderful opportunity for an early career attorney or someone looking to make a mid-career shift. Successful candidates will have a desire to make a difference and a willingness to jump in, learn a new area of law, and develop strong advocacy skills. The ideal candidate enjoys representing individuals and is enthusiastic about collaborating to identify and implement systemic changes. GJP is the state expert on record clearing and legal barriers to reentry, and frequently provides technical assistance to other attorneys, judges, and legislators.
The records team removes barriers to employment, housing, occupational licensing, and other opportunities, utilizing all record clearing tools available under Georgia law. As a staff attorney you will advise and assist individuals with record clearing; prepare pardon applications; assist with record clearing events and Second Chance Desks around the state; advise individuals on records-related occupational licensing issues; advocate for clients with employers or housing providers; and assist survivors of human trafficking with vacatur and record clearing. You will collaborate to create educational materials, make presentations on record clearing and reentry issues, develop technology and tools to increase access to record clearing, identify potential systemic reforms, and implement new record clearing laws.
ABOUT US
For 40 years, GJP has served individuals, families, and communities impacted by the criminal legal system. GJP has two goals: lowering the number of Georgians under correctional control and reducing barriers to reentry. We carry out these goals by providing direct legal and social services – including holistic criminal defense, record clearing, and reentry legal services; advocating for policy change in Georgia; and educating officials and community members on criminal justice and reentry issues. You can read more at GJP.org.
We have successfully drafted and advocated for significant expansions of record clearing eligibility. We continue to pursue additional ways to expand record clearing with the input of team members and centered around our clients lived experience. Demand for our services is high. We are continually developing ways to increase the impact of our work and ensure as many people as possible can take advantage of all record clearing remedies.
